And now, an “Enjoy Music” Moment, brought to you by Saltmarsh Music.
Velcro
Students, and especially middle schoolers and teenagers, tend to have a negativity bias towards their education.
Social scientists have proven that basically all people have a Velcro brain for bad experiences and a Teflon brain for good ones.
When you open a music school whose primary goals are to enjoy music & inspire kids - you need to face these facts head on.
So, I always lean into the positives - while tuning students’ guitars - I’ll routinely ask “what was the best part of your school day today?” It’s usually a special project, or gym or recess, or some kids are just super into math or reading and want to tell you about that day’s lesson.
But one time I skipped a word.
“What’s the best part of your day today?”
And the kid knew I skipped a word - he double checked - “...the best part of my day today?”
“Yeah,” still oblivious to the omission.
“The best part of my day is coming here.”
Maybe the social scientists are wrong sometimes - because that’s Velcroed.
Enjoy Music. Inspire Kids.
